A Study on Proportional Mortality Indicator as a Comprehensive Health Indicator

Abstract
Proportional Mortality Indiator in Korea was calculated using the Census age data, and comparison between provinces cross-sectionally as well as temporally and the associations between Proportional Mortality Indicator and other health indicators were studied. The estimate of deaths by age was made from Census survival ratio.
As a comprehensive indicator of the level of health, Proportional Mortaliy Indicator revealed progressive promotion of level of health in Korea between 1960 to 1970.
Close association were observed between PMI and crude mortality rate, which was not the case of studies done by Uemura et al. This is explainable with the young population of Korea and the relatively low value of PMI compared with advanced countries.
Age adjusted PMI of metropolitan area was higher than rural provinces, which attributable to difference of socio-economic level as well as better health care.
